SIGHTS ON LA CIENEGA
New sources invigorate a Los Angeles shopping street
Hardly tucked away, La Cienega Boulevard is a notorious artery of Los Angeles traffic. Passing scenery is often overlooked, but the several blocks between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue are certainly worth a gander. Once home to a stodgier lot of rug shops, galleries and period antique stores, the area has more recently flourished into a concentrated row of mixed design shops, some whose doors have been open only a few months, and several whose courtyard and garden retreats are a haven from the urban poise. And in a city where people rarely walk, it’s refreshing that this stretch on the edge of West Hollywood is establishing itself as a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. “This area has a European feel,” says Adam Blackman, co-owner of Blackman Cruz. “Unlike other shopping areas in town, you can park your car and really have a look around. And at night, with the restaurants and clubs, it’s a whole other world.”
